Welcome to the TransLondon discussion group website

TransLondon is a discussion/support group for all members of the ‘trans’ community, whatever their gender identity (or identities) and whatever stage in their ‘transition’ they have reached (if at all). However, all members must themselves be trans-identified or ‘questioning’.

The TransLondon group meets on the third tuesday of every month at 7.30pm at Gay's The Word Bookshop, 66, Marchmont Street, London, WC1N 1AB. The next meeting is on Tuesday 16th March.

Gay's The Word is only two minutes walk straight out of Russell Square tube. It is also a short walk from Euston Road, so easily accessible from King's Cross, St Pancras or Euston stations.

2010 Lineup
On March 16th, Michelle Bridgman from the Gender Trust will be speaking to the group. Michelle Bridgman is a Psychotherapist specialising in working with trans people and their families. She is currently a candidate on a doctoral programme at Middlesex University where she is researching clinical treatment for trans people. She will be sharing some of the outcomes of this work as well as developments within the trans community in this country and abroad.

In April, we will be welcoming Dr Kenneth Demsky, an American psychologist who has many years experience working with trans people. Dr Demsky provides counselling and support to those undergoing transition and their partners.

Watch this space for more news about 2010’s lineup.

Oxfordshire PCT’s Refusal to Fund
Oxfordshire PCT has been operating what amounts to a blanket funding ban of core surgical procedures for gender dysphoria treatment. Their policy is due to be reviewed in March, and in preparation Sally Outen, Rachel Payne, Sharly-Clare Busuttil and Alina Whiteman have prepared a report which has been presented to the PCT, as well as other interested bodies. A copy of the report may be downloaded from here.

Gay's The Word Needs Your Support
Britain's only lesbian, gay, bi and trans bookshop, which has been an inspiration to a generation of writers, is under a threat from rising rents and falling sales. Please feel free to browse the shelves and show your support by making a purchase at the meeting.

The Aims of TransLondon are to:

  1. provide a safe place to explore and express your personal gender identity
  2. combat isolation
  3. provide support with information and resources
  4. provide a space where all trans people can socialize, share experiences and exchange ideas
  5. combat transphobia
  6. promote greater acceptance and rights for all transpeople
  7. provide help & advice for transpeople who want to support their friends, family & colleagues
  8. provide advice and support with transitioning

Above all, the group is intended to foster a sense of inclusion and celebration of each of us as unique and valued (trans) people.
